Not quite. Convincing people not to pirate is not the same as convincing them to pay--which is supposed to be the end goal, right? However, not all is lost on "pirates". Like any other demographic, you have to know what the market wants. One thing to separate is those who can't buy, but would, and those who are not interested in paying. Even with global trade and the internet, regional licensing still tends to delay or even block entire markets. Obviously, you have to be able to sell to the market before you can get anyone to buy, so the issue of legacy middle-men has to be addressed before you can consider piracy.

Others that pirate doesn't mean that they won't pay. Like any other non-costumer, you have to figure out what they want. As you pointed out, getting to a price point that they're willing to pay helps. You know, like a $15 CD vs. $1 track on iTunes. Others are drawn by convenience. Again, the CD vs. iTunes comparison comes to mind.

Pirates that are completely uninterested in paying money for infinite goods aren't necessarily unwilling to pay. For those who still value convenience maybe willing to pay with time through ad-sponsored streaming. Hulu and internet radio are quite popular. Some even still use traditional broadcast too.

Even for those geeky enough to consider setting up a BitTorrent client to automatically pull RSS-feeds "convenient", there's always merchandising. Yes, I know you're laughing, but it is a multi-billion dollar industry, and it is one thing that geeks who would never pay for intangibles actually buy. Think about it, who buys all of those geeky action figures, memorabilia, and logo-wear? GEEKS! And even those who won't buy this stuff still wear promo tee-shirts that are given out at events. Sure, those cost money, but the whole point is to get people to be walking billboards advertising the product.

And speaking of PR...even those who won't buy anything aren't completely anti-social--they tell their friends and family about their experiences. Some consider the pirate a "lost" sale, but everyone they get to buy who otherwise wouldn't have is still a sale all the same. I'm not saying it completely balances out, but a sale is a sale, and getting people to pay is the goal, right? Of course, not all PR is good PR, so word of mouth advertising only works for things that people actually like. I guess that's the real reason the movie and recording industry hates piracy--it's harder to con people into paying if they've already heard the products stinks.

Social impact bonds, a useful experiment underway in England, is gaining attention on this side of the pond, including from the Obama administration. We are glad to see this at SeaChange (a non-profit group seeking innovative ways to bring capital to the non-profit sector). What is deeply concerning, though, is how some elites are packaging and promoting social impact bonds as yet one more example of everything the market does is good while everything government does is bad. Moreover, these same elites betray a stunningly superficial grasp about how markets actually work.

This is lamentable. Think for a moment about a common method among athletic coaches. Whether its tennis, golf, baseball, or any other sport, coaches know that athletes might get the right or wrong results by doing things the right or wrong way. You might win a tennis match with a sloppy forehand – and, ultimately, if you’re to improve your game, you need to win matches hitting forehands correctly. My skepticism, then, is less about using and learning from social impact bonds than about the ‘right result, wrong way’ advocacy that links them to ideological ‘givens’ about always good markets and always bad government. Moreover, this same overly simplistic positioning threatens to create ‘wrong result, wrong way’ outcomes by too easily producing misuses of social impact bonds in ways that cause them to fail.

For those who’ve not heard of them, let’s answer the Times’ David Leonhardt’s question, “What are social impact bonds?”

The short answer: a vehicle offering investors bond-like returns for taking equity-like risks on investing in potential solutions to socio-economic challenges. The key to success lies in the performance results achieved by the social service providers. If yes, investors gain bond-like returns sourced from cash linked to that performance. If the providers fall short, however, investors suffer equity-like losses. A group called Social Finance is experimenting with social impact bonds aimed at reducing recidivism among inmates in a UK prison. If they lower the recidivism rate by 10% greater than comparable prisons, investors gain between 7.5% to 13.5% returns. If the social service providers fail to do this, investors lose their money.

Let’s first look at the ‘right result, wrong way’ chorus on how social impact bonds derive from the wonderfulness of markets. Leonhardt does this. So does Harvard Professor Jeffrey Liebman in a Center for American Progress white paper on the subject.

Both are enthusiastic about how social impact bonds can bring much needed to capital to serious social ills. Terrific! Maybe we’ll get the ‘right result’. But why must each slide into the all-too-predictable ‘either/or-ism’ that bedevils our search for creative solutions to real problems. Not only do they premise support for social impact bonds on the monotonously dumb meme of ‘markets good/government bad’; but, they do so in ways that threaten to add the phrase ‘market discipline’ to ‘free markets’ and ‘shareholder value’ as yet one more entry in the mindless lexicon of the status quo.

Discipline is not a phenomenon uniquely linked only to markets – a point ignored by Liebman and Leonhardt. We can and do speak just as much about organizational disciplines, network disciplines and personal disciplines. What ‘market’, e.g., explains the discipline used by weekend tennis players to hit forehands correctly? Organizations, too, choose the disciplines used to achieve their purposes. Yes, sometimes those choices are influenced by markets – but not always and certainly not always in ways so ideologically implied by Liebman and Leonhardt.

Liebman notes that too many government programs have disciplines that focus more on defining activities than results. But it does not follow logically or empirically that ‘market discipline’ is the only cure when such an activity-focus has ill effects. (I say “when” because, while there are ill effects to address, Liebman’s ‘either/or-ism’ ignores the good effects of an activity-focus in governmental contexts; namely, the means and ends demanded by notions of fairness and due process inherent in some versions of the rule of law.) Most private sector organizations, by the way, also have various forms of activity-driven disciplines that arise from the operations of their hierarchies, management processes and shared values – patterns that emerge notwithstanding the effects of the disciplines imposed by the markets in which they compete. Consider only the long, sad history of American automakers over much of the last three to four decades. For them, activity-driven organizational disciplines trumped ‘market discipline’.

But the flip side is also in evidence. That is, in addition to observable private sector activity disciplines trumping market discipline, we also see plenty of examples of organizational performance disciplines instead of activity disciplines in the absence of any market. Over the past few years, for example, a range of Georgia state government leaders with whom I’ve worked have shifted their agencies toward performance disciplines for services ranging from driver’s license renewals to job preparedness to prison reform to education to highway maintenance and more. Millions of dollars have been put to more productive use, and dozens of innovations plus much better customer service and new capabilities have been spawned – and all in the absence of any discipline derived from any market.

Both/and. Not either/or. The bottom line: markets might impose performance disciplines on organizations. But, contrary to the ‘markets good/governments bad’ trope, there’s neither any guarantee that the existence of a market equates with a disciplined focus on performance nor the inevitability that the absence of a market prevents as much. Why then is there this deep-felt need by elites to hew their conversations to the ideological line of ‘markets good/governments bad’?

The absence of ‘market discipline’, then, does not prevent any agency at any level of government from a shift to performance: it’s a question of leadership and will. Might social impact bonds help? Yes. But it’s not the kind of sine qua non requirement suggested by Liebman’s and Leonhardt’s all-or-nothing use of a phrase like ‘market discipline’.

Next, the ideological use of ‘market discipline’ clothed in ‘market good/government bad’ rhetoric is, well, unreal. Liebman and Leonhardt are smart and accomplished individuals. They’ve been around. So, why the thundering silence about ‘market discipline’ and, ahem, you know, events of the past decade? How did this ideologically pure ‘market discipline’ work out in financial, residential and commercial real estate, health care, and other markets? Leonhardt points to the wasting of ‘billions of dollars’ in government programs. How about the trillions of dollars of value destruction in these arenas subject to ‘market discipline’?

The concept that market discipline guarantees efficiency and effectiveness is fallacious. Nearly four years ago, for example, it was clear that the performance disciplines used by the best non-profit housing groups far outstripped the performance disciplines used by the private sector in terms of delinquencies and foreclosures. Yet, the private sector got all the capital. So much for ‘market discipline’. What happened there? Was there no market discipline? Was there no link between capital markets and competitive performance?

No. Actually, the reverse. Capital market discipline combined with organizational and managerial disciplines to promote a peculiar kind of performance on private sector players. We all know the nice sounding words that were (and are) used for this: earnings, returns, ‘shareholder value’. It’s just that these melodious sounds became ever more narrowly and loudly linked to unsustainable and even criminal greed through the precincts of the shorter-term, the quicker buck, the larger bonus, and the faster, more untraceable shifting of risk to others. Yes, ‘market discipline’ focused all of the various players on performance – banks, mortgage brokers, real estate brokers, hedge funds, ratings agencies, lawyers, accountants and more. But instead of efficiency and effectiveness that maniacal performance focus gave us control fraud, speculation, looting and managerial–and-casino capitalism.

Does that make ‘market discipline’ evil and bad? No. Remember: both/and, not either/or. Liebman and Leonhardt would recoil at anyone who condemned ‘market discipline’ to be banished from human experience based on these gargantuan failures of the past decade. Why, then, do they crow so loudly in favor of market discipline as a panacea for government and social sector ills? Again, why only a reference to the billions wasted by (some) government efforts and not the trillions destroyed by (some) markets?

Whenever a holiday rolls around it seems that the go to gift for most has become a gift card to some store, restaurant, or online e-store. Sometimes I receive cards that I know I'll actually use and others I have to think long and hard of something I want to purchase and usually I forget I even have the card in my wallet. Another type of gift card I receive are store credits when I return an item that I no longer have a receipt for.

Instead of letting these cards get lost in your wallet, consider selling them on eBay! It's amazing how much of the value of the cards you can actually recover. The smaller the amount the more likely you'll actually get the full value of the card. Most of the time I recover 90-95% of the value of the card and the cold hard cash adds up for something I'd really rather have. It's funny how much people are willing to pay for these gift cards. I'm not sure why or what they do with them when they pay full value but for example a Visa Gift Card can be a real find for them because of the activation fees and shipping charges that you don't have on eBay. The majority of the time I follow these rules for selling gift cards for cash.

1. Make sure that you offer free shipping. If the amount is $20.00 or under I'll usually risk shipping by putting a stamp on an envelope and sending it off. Anything over $50.00 use confirmation tracking on your shipment so you can prove they received it and not have anyone rip you off by getting the card and reporting you didn't ship it (I learned my lesson the hard way on that one).

2. Be sure to ship it out the day after they pay for it so you can be sure to get great feedback and meet their timelines in case they need it for a gift, etc.

3. Only list one gift card at a time and make sure it's already in your sold column before listing another or eBay will remove your listing. You are supposed to only sell one gift card a week but I've found as long as one is out of my current listings I can put another one on the next day.

Following these rules will allow you to get great feedback and start raking in the cash versus the credit on your unused or unwanted gift cards.

Making Money Cash

Tibetan religious leader in-exile “Karmapa” Ogyen Trinley Dorje, who is likely to replace the Dalai Lama as the world symbol of Tibetan Buddhism and icon of Tibetan aspirations, is now surrounded with a serious controversy. Police in India have raided his monastery near Dharamsala, and allegedly recovered foreign and Indian currency worth nearly Rs 70 million.

Dorje, now 25, is the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism and has been in Dharamsala since his headline-making escape to India in January 2000, when he was only 14.

The Karmapa’s office, in a statement said, they were “complying fully with the investigation”, reports The Hindustan Times. ” ‘Our lineage and His Holiness the Karmapa enjoy the love, trust and faith of millions across the world. We have a rich history of public service made possible through financial dealings that are entirely transparent,’ the Karmapa Office of Administration said in the statement. (See here…)

Dorje has been under the Indian security agencies’ scanner since his arrival in India. He lives in Sidhbari, 10 km from the Dalai Lama’s residence. The Indian government has confined the Karmapa’s movements within 15 km of his home for sometime, and does not allow him to visit the Dalai Lama too frequently, reports The Telegraph.

” ‘On July 25, 2009, the Karmapa was given only 30 minutes to meet the Dalai Lama. Earlier, three consecutive requests from him to see the spiritual leader were turned down,’ a source close to the Dalai Lama said.

“Since July 2008, the Indian government has refused to let the Karmapa visit other monasteries in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir that are located close to the India-China border.

“Dorje has also been banned from travelling abroad. He had toured the US in 2008, when he visited New York and San Francisco in an attempt to raise his international profile. He is keen to visit America again but the government has not budged. (See here…)

“The Karmapa’s Z-plus security cover was withdrawn a couple of months ago; so he is now guarded by a single police constable instead of 24 security personnel. Till 2006, he was always escorted by a group of four aides but that was stopped after the security agencies objected.” More here…

Lot of speculation has begun as to the motive and timing of raiding the Karmapa’s monastery at Sidhbari. All religious orders in India receive huge donations. No one has heard so far about any other religious group being targeted. Taking action against such groups is considered a highly sensitive issue. So why the Karmapa’s monastery?

This development should please the Chinese government no end. Chinese are keen that there is no symbolic head of the Tibetan movement in exile once Dalai Lama is no more. The Indian government also knows this. Now the question is whether the Indian government has taken this drastic step in consultation with the Dalai Lama or merely on the basis of its old suspicion that the young Karmapa is a Chinese spy?

Black money is a common currency in India. The BBC reports: “A recent conservative estimate by the US-based group Global Financial Integrity Index pegs illicit capital flows between 1948, a year after Independence, and 2008, at $462bn – an amount that is twice India’s external debt. India’s underground economy today is estimated to account for half of the country’s GDP.

“Thanks to opposition and public ire over a series of corruption scandals, ‘black money’ is back in the spotlight. The Supreme Court has been chiding the beleaguered government for not doing enough to unearth illicit money. ‘Is there no basis to figure out black money?’ the court wondered on Thursday. ‘What is the source of black money, which has been stashed away in foreign banks? Is it from arms dealing, drug peddling or smuggling?’ ”

Indian politicians and power elite stand tainted in the eyes of the public with the government dilly-dallying on the issue of releasing the names of those whose ill-gotten wealth is stashed away in Swiss and other foreign banks.

One hopes that the Indian government has enough proof to hold the Karmapa guilty. Otherwise the great reputation of India, built by leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi, as a sanctuary for persecuted people would be reduced to dirt.

A large portion of the American population is living paycheck to paycheck these days. Most families are looking for some way of making a bit of extra money for a special purchase or sometime just to make ends meet. A plot of land or even the backyard can be transformed into a pumpkin patch that will offer you some extra cash in the fall. Follow this guide to making money growing and selling pumpkins.

Growing Pumpkins

Location

Pumpkins are sun-loving vegetables. Choose a planting location that will offer at least 6 hours of full sunshine per day. However, don't plant your pumpkins, or another squash variety, in the same location two years in a row. Next year find another location for your pumpkins or experiment with another crop. There are so many pumpkin varieties to choose from, some very large, some very small and even some that are a creamy white in color.

Seeds

If you have enough garden space, choose several different varieties of pumpkins. The popular jack-o-lantern style pumpkins will always be popular. However, you can also find them at any grocery store during the fall season. Types of pumpkins not found readily offer the consumer an opportunity to choose something unique. The small variety will give you more individual pumpkins per plant, about 12. Regular-sized pumpkin plants will offer 3 to 4 each. Choose pumpkin types that will grow to maturity within the growing season of your location. In other words, if you have a short growing season, choose varieties that will mature in the shortest amount of time. Next year you can start the seeds indoors, while it is still cold outside. This will give you a head start making money growing and selling pumpkins.

Plant 3 or 4 seeds per mound, but choose only the strongest, healthiest seedling and pull out the rest. If you don't, the plants will compete with each other for nutrients and water. It's better to have one healthy plant that will offer a harvest of great looking pumpkins, than three mediocre plants that will give you mediocre pumpkins.

Garden Bed Preparation

Dig up the soil in the garden plot. Use your shovel to dig down about 2 feet, turning the soil as you go. Remove any unwanted items, such as weeds, stones or twigs. Use compost to amend the soil. It adds needed nutrition, as well as, making for a well drained soil. You'll need about a 2-inch layer over the top of the garden bed. Work it into the soil. Rake the area even.

Create dirt mounds for your plants. Make a moat with your hoe around the mound, for watering. Read the back of your pumpkin seed packet for instructions on how far apart to build the dirt mounds. It will also tell you how deep to plant the particular variety of seed. Different varieties will require a differing amount of space between the mounds. Planting your seeds on these mounds will allow the pumpkin plant adequate drainage. The mounds also offer the heat needed for the seeds to germinate.

Tips: Lay a flag board or piece of cardboard beneath each pumpkin while it grows. This will keep pests and predators away from the pumpkins. It will also keep it dry and you will end up with a better looking pumpkin. If you use cardboard, and it gets wet, discard it for a dry piece immediately.

Harvest

A minimum of three months is required for growing pumpkins. The only real way of knowing that your crop is ready for harvest is when they stop growing. As you check the pumpkins daily and water them, it will seem as though they are larger each time. When they seems to stop, it's time to harvest. Cut each pumpkin from the vine with a sharp knife. Be careful not to pull or damage the plant, as there will be other pumpkins still growing on the vine. Don't cut too close to the top of the pumpkin. You'll want a 3 inch stem or more. Give the pumpkin full support by carrying it from the bottom, not just from the stem.

Storage

Make sure to store your harvested pumpkins in a dry, cool location. If it is dark, all the better. Layout a large piece of plywood or flat cardboard for the pumpkins to rest on. However, you should do your best to begin selling your crop as soon as possible after harvest.

Selling Pumpkins

Locations

Don't discount local farmers and Saturday markets, especially for your first time out selling pumpkins. Purchase a canvas canopy, the type used in backyards or for camping. Use fold up tables as well as wood boxes and hay bails to decorated the inside of your space and display pumpkins. Give yourself a name and have it printed on a canvas or plastic banner. This can be done fairly inexpensively from a sign shop. Generally, these types of markets place ads in local newspapers and radio stations.

If you have access to property that runs along a busy road, you can put up your own booth. However, make sure you follow all rules and regulations for your town or county. You may be required to obtain a business license and/or other permits. Zoning may also be an issue. Make sure your booth is as interesting as you can make it. You don't want to create an eyesore, but you do still want to attract customers. If you will use this booth year-after-year, consider building a sturdy wood structure. You want to keep your pumpkins as cool and dry as possible.

Additional Items

You've drawn the customers in, now what else can you sell them. Get your creative juices flowing and make other crafts that match the theme. Make sure you have some ready made jack-o-lanterns for display and for sale. Paint brightly colored faces on some of them. Offer a flyer on how to cut, clean and cook the pumpkin for use in recipes. Offer another flyer on how to roast pumpkin seeds. Make up a recipe booklet, full of pumpkin recipes. Make home-made scarecrows and wooden Halloween and harvest signs for the yard. Make colorful trick-or-treat bags. Sell portions of roasted pumpkin seeds and freshly baked pumpkin desserts and breads, if you have access to a certified kitchen.
